SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE FOR THE INTERNATIONAL GEOSPHERE-BIOSPHERE PROGRAMME
(SC-IGBP)

Introduction

A special Committee for the IGBP was created at the 21st General Assembly of ICSU in 1986 to plan for the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme: A Study of Global Change (IGBP). The objectives of the SC-IGBP are:

- to describe and understand the interactive physical, chemical and biological processes that regulate the total Earth system, the unique environment that it provides for life, the changes that are occurring in this system and the manner in which they are influenced by human actions. A Scientific Committee was appointed in September,1990 (as the successor to the Special Committee) to guide the implementation of the IGBP research.

WORLD CLIMATE RESEARCH PROGRAMME (WCRP)

Introduction

The conduct of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) is governed by an agreement in 1993 between ICSU, WMO and IOC which makes the programme a collaborative undertaking of the three organisations. The objectives of WCRP are to develop the fundamental scientific understanding of the physical climate system and climate processes need to determine to what extend climate can be predicted and the extent of man's influence on climate.

There is a joint WMO/ICSU and IOC scientific committee (JSC) which provided scientific guidance in all aspects of the WCRP in harmony with overall aims of the sponsoring organisations.
